7 Self-Care Practices for Busy Women: Prioritising Your Well-Being

As women, we often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, striving to “have it all.” But let’s be honest—trying to do it all can leave us feeling stretched thin and disconnected from ourselves. The truth is, your well-being matters just as much as anything else on your to-do list, and neglecting it only leads to burnout. I know, I have been there too!

If you’re reading this, you already know self-care is important. But recognising its importance is just the first step; actually prioritising it is where the real challenge lies. This week I have shared with you 7 of my top practical strategies that have helped me to create space for self-care, even with a busy routine!

1. Establish Clear Boundaries

Healthy boundaries are the foundation of self-care. They help protect your time, energy, and peace of mind. Without them, stress creeps in, leaving you feeling drained and overwhelmed.

Start small by defining what you need and setting boundaries around those needs. Here are a few examples:

  • “I’m not responsible for solving everyone’s problems.”

  • “I’ll take 30 minutes of uninterrupted time for myself every day.”

  • “I don’t need to reply to every message instantly.”

Once you’ve identified your boundaries, communicate them clearly and stick to them. It might feel awkward at first, especially if you’re used to putting others’ needs before your own, but over time, it gets easier—and more empowering.

2. Reclaim Your Time

The most common excuse for neglecting self-care is, “I don’t have time.” But often, it’s not about the amount of time we have—it’s how we manage it.

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Do a Time Audit: Track how you spend your day to identify areas where time is wasted or activities that don’t serve you.

  • Prioritise Tasks: Focus on what truly matters and let go of the unnecessary. Not everything needs to be done immediately.

  • Schedule Self-Care: Treat self-care like any other commitment. Block out time in your calendar for a walk, a workout, or even 15 minutes of quiet.

  • Stop Multitasking: Focus on one thing at a time to feel less scattered and more productive.

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Reward yourself for sticking to your self-care routine, whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea in peace or watching an episode of your favourite show.

3. Let Go of Guilt

Feeling guilty for putting yourself first? You’re not alone. Many of us have been conditioned to believe that prioritising ourselves is selfish. But here’s the truth: taking care of your own well-being benefits everyone around you.

When you’re rested and recharged, you’re more patient, present, and productive. Let go of the guilt—it serves no purpose. Instead, remind yourself that self-care is a form of self-respect.

4. Set Achievable Self-Care Goals

Having clear, realistic goals can help you stay on track. Start small and build from there. For example:

  • “I’ll go for a 10-minute walk each morning this week.”

  • “I’ll spend 20 minutes reading before bed instead of scrolling on my phone.”

It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. Small, consistent actions add up to big changes over time.

5. Make the Most of Small Moments

Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive retreats or hours of free time. It can be as simple as finding joy in everyday moments:

  • Taking a few deep breaths when you feel stressed.

  • Savouring your morning coffee instead of rushing through it.

  • Enjoying a conversation with a loved one without distractions.

These little acts of mindfulness can shift your perspective and help you feel more grounded, even on busy days.

6. Seek Support When Needed

Sometimes, the hardest part of self-care is figuring out where to start or staying consistent. That’s where a coach can make all the difference.

A coach can help you:

  • Set realistic and personalised self-care goals.

  • Create a plan that fits into your lifestyle.

  • Stay accountable and motivated.

  • Navigate challenges with encouragement and support.

7. Put It on the Calendar

If self-care always seems to slip through the cracks, schedule it. Book that yoga class, plan a quiet evening at home, or arrange a catch-up with friends. Treat these moments as non-negotiable.
